I’ve come to learn that one of my superpowers is holding space – for others and for myself.
What is Holding Space?
I define holding space as an act of being. I believe holding space is an energetic practice with the powerful intention of sending loving, non-judgemental, supportive healing, and thoughtful energy.
This can be done in person or can be done from a distance – it’s the power of intention and energy.
Holding space is like walking side by side with another, or with yourself. For me, the feel of holding space reminds me of the Footprints in the Sand poem by Mary Stevenson, in which the Lord states that during the difficult times, the single footprints represent being carried by Him. The Lord is not physically carrying you, but the intent and the feeling is energetic - the love and support is really happening, it’s not in the physical doing but in the being.
This last year, I have had to really harness holding space for myself. Honouring the wisdom to step into the world from my heart instead of the logical mind for myself has helped me master holding space for others.
I am experiencing a transition in the way my children need me. My sons are growing into their adolescence and how they need me to be present as a mom is changing. One of my sons is now in high school and it has taken me a good year to get my bearings. I feel I have had to grieve my expectations of what a mom should be doing and learn to just BE for him instead of doing for him. My learning this has decreased the power struggles while creating peace within my day and in our household.
Steps on holding space:
2. Breathe – focus on the sensation of breathing. Bringing the minds’ attention to the inhale and exhale
3. Focus on your heart – Be aware of your heart energy. How do you feel? What is your intention?
4. Fill yourself up with love, send love out from your heart – Imagine you are a conduit (e.g., funnel / rod), as you inhale receive in the energy of love from the soles of your feet up through your spine extending
out the top of your head up into the heavens. On your exhale, rest the loving energy to your heart and
guide the energy out to whom you desire to send it to.
This is an important step in holding space. Filling yourself up first and then extending energy out is vital
in maintaining your health and vitality. If you don’t fill yourself up first, you will deplete your own energy which will leave you drained and unhappy.
This is a powerful practice. It is a part of who I am and I practice it with every breath in every moment in every day.
May you use it wisely and in love.
