Kmok the Elephant
May 1st is Save the Rhino Day!
May is my favorite month of the year! I think it’s because it’s such an Animal-Centric month! Let’s take a look at some of the fun ‘days’ that Amazing May gives us.
First up are the events for the month including National Pet Month, GO FETCH! Food Drive for Homeless Pets Month and Gardening for Wildlife Month. Imagine the fun you and your kids could have by picking up a can of pet food or bag of treats during your weekly shopping trip then presenting the items to your local animal shelter at month’s end. Here’s a link for more ideas on how to help homeless animals.
Or getting your kiddos outside to plant some wildlife friendly foliage. Check out the National Wildlife Federations link for some super easy ideas to invite wildlife into your living space. You can even have your yard certified as a wildlife habitat!
Then there is Be Kind to Animals Week (first full week of May) and Dog Bite Prevention Week (May 15-21). I’ll be going more in-depth regarding dog bite prevention in a future column.
Both are great topics to educate children about important aspects of living with animals.
Then there are the Days….oh the glorious Days!
- From Hug Your Cat Day (May 3) to
- Animal Disaster Preparedness Day (May 8) to
- Frog Jumping Day (May 11)….there are days for
- Special-abled Pets (May 3),
- Migratory Birds (May 14),
- Dinosaur Day (May 15),
- Sea Monkeys (May 16),
- Turtles (May 23),
- Whooping Cranes (May 28) and so many more!
May 20 is Endangered Species Day. Visit:
http://www.nwf.org/Kids/Family-Fun.aspx for fun activities such as kid friendly healthy recipes with animal themes, games and free downloadable coloring pages featuring endangered species.
You might also enjoy watching live animals in action at:
This link shows brown bears fishing in Brooks Falls, Alaska but on this same site are links for eagle, orca, tiger and Africa cams.
See what I mean? What a great month for animals! And what great opportunities for the kids to get involved and truly experience the great feeling that comes from helping our animal friends.
There is a Hindu prayer that says, “May all that have life be delivered from suffering.”
This is the perfect time to sit down with your family and reflect on all the wonder that our beautiful World has to offer and our part in keeping it safe. Whether it be through action, education or awareness….we all have the Power within us to make a difference.
Thank you for joining me in celebrating AMAZING MAY! See you next month!
