7th Heaven

Dearest Daughter M,

You have transitioned into seventh grade with grace and ease.  Overwhelmed at orientation, not wanting to practice your schedule with the rest of the kids and parents, we headed home.  On a quiet day, we returned and I explained to you the new process, room to room, every hour a new teacher.  After a few attempts, you were ready to brave the new world.

School began.  You made it on your own, not missing a beat.  This was a test of your organizational skills. You did not falter.

Tryouts for volleyball came the following week.  You and your friends, all together, showcased your skills on the court.  Some made the A Team.  Some made the B Team.  With tears rolling down your cheeks, you entered the house.  B Team it was.  You were not happy.  You wanted to quit, right then and there.  We hugged without words.
Upstairs to the security of your room you trotted.  Finally, we talked.  I explained to you how proud I was that you were brave enough and made the effort to try out.  You didn’t agree with me.  You were disappointed.  While I talked about the experience of traveling to new schools and meeting new girls, you listened, quietly.  The weekend came.  Monday was decision day.  With pep talks from other friends on the B Team and your Dad, you decided to play.

A month into the school year and you handle homework, tests, practice, games, dramatic friends, and boys.  You amaze me with your abilities to view the situation as it is.  Hard work and effort are your strong traits.  Stronger traits include knowing who you are and what’s right for you.  While you are sensitive to the needs of others, ultimately you stand up for yourself when you are being disrespected.
I see your strength increasing daily, as you grow into a calm and balanced young woman.  I couldn’t be prouder of the person you are.

Love,
Mom
