Zippy and Zany

Dearest Daughter Z,

Zippy and zany are two words to describe your spunky personality.
I love those traits about you, and the others you possess.

Last month, you tried out for a competitive soccer club with your friends.
This would be a big change from the recreational league you joined the past year.
With determination and grit, you ran drills during the tryouts.
For an hour and a half, you tested your skills, on a hot summer night.

We waited for the results.  Days later, a coach called.
“These are the calls I hate to make," he started out saying.
He gave me feedback and suggestions on improving your game.

Sitting you down, I relayed the news.  Brave and strong, you swallowed the information.  Off to your room to process for twenty minutes, then you were good and ready to go to a friend’s house.

How proud am I?  I am proud that you are playing soccer, after years in gymnastics.  I am proud that you had the courage, strength, and fortitude to “try out” for a competitive league.  Yes, the results weren’t what we had hoped for, but the fact that you were out there in the first place is what really matters.

Your adventurous spirit will take you far and may drive me crazy.  With a new bike underfoot, you are off, searching the area for trails and paths to follow.
I love your passion and free spirit.  You are fearless and full of inquiry.
You test your limits and push me out of my comfort zone.
I ask that you never change this behavior.

From all things pink, to wearing only boy clothes, your choices have run the full spectrum, during your elementary years.  As you enter into sixth grade, your fashion preferences are again changing, as you mature into a young adult.
Shopping with you is another adventure. You test the limits, with off shoulder shirts and short shorts, begging me to examine my own reservations.
Even so, I love you for who you are.
My hope for you is to always love yourself.

Love,
 Mom
