Change: Can't Live with It. Life is Full of It.
Ideas for Creating a Change Friendly Family
There is a Place for Everything, and Everything in its Place
Do you have a place where you put your keys each day when you enter the house? What about your purse? The children’s backpacks, or stroller bag? What about when you make lunches or do laundry? Can you find what you need? - Creating an entryway nook, whether it’s a fancy built in cubby or simply a table or corner of the room, having one place to put the essentials for leaving the house can cut the time it takes to get out the door in half. Create a system where you and the children put their going out things in this area. Then when you need to leave in a hurry, it will all be in one place. Plus you don’t have to deal with dirty book bags on your kitchen counter or tripping over them in the living room anymore! - Create lunch drawer and cupboard area. Just like you might do for cereal, meats, or veggies, separate an area in your fridge and cupboard for the items that are good for lunches. If you pre-pack into individual portions you can even let the children choose to pack their own lunches! - Bedtime can be tricky with the extra glass of water or another book to read. Have your children pick out the books during the day and set their PJs with the books in a bedtime basket or special place in the bedroom. When it is time for bed, place the amount of approved cups of water near the bed with it! That way “Can I get a glass of water?” having you run back and forth to the kitchen is no longer an issue and the children know what is allowed and what isn’t. Stick to a routine and young children will learn to go to sleep on their own. - Is your car a mess? Place a medium sized trash can in the car with extra trash bags handy. As children are done with snacks, etc. have them place their trash there - instead of on the floor! Make it a routine to have kids pick up the wayward cheerios and wrappers that do get left out as they get in and out of car. Toss the trash in the garage and place a new bag in when it’s full and keep those days of overwhelming cleaning the car to a minimum! ---- For more ideas on how to create new routines, systems, and create a way of life that goes with the flow of changes instead of being blindsided by them, check back for more ideas to come in future editions of: Change: Can’t Live With it.
